Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Attention Coalition Members — please provide updates on your projects.

Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) encompass a broad range of electronic and wireless communications-based information and control technologies. When integrated into the transportation system infrastructure, and ultimately for vehicles, these technologies help monitor and manage traffic flow, reduce congestion, provide alternate routes to travelers, enhance productivity and most importantly, increase safety.

According to a study by the Federal Highway Administration, only 40% of congestion is generally attributed to bottlenecks, with 60% attributed to factors that ITS can address.

ITS is not just high tech traffic control, it's also using technology and forming institutional partnerships to enhance the operations and safety of our transportation system, saving lives, time and money.  The North Florida TPO, FDOT and JTA lead the North Florida ITS Coalition with over 100 members representing 60+ public and private sector organizations in the traffic, transportation, municipal services, public safety, commerce, military and special events fields.  Coalition members work together to plan, coordinate, obtain funding and implement ITS projects that will improve our regional transportation system.
